An atmospheric visit under a bleak winter sky to Haughmond Abbey, a ruined Medieval Augustinian Monastery

Haughmond Abbey  Haughmond Abbey located in Shrewsbury in Shropshire around a 1 0 minute drive from Albrighton Hall and Spa which is where we were staying for the evening (reviewed in another post  https://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/albrighton.en.html?aid=8023173&no_rooms=1&group_adults=2 ) We visited as it was convenient for our stay, not knowing a great deal about the Abbey and what to expect, it made for a very enjoyable impromptu experience.  The Abbey covers quite a large area and there is still several large ruined pieces of the structure to enjoy.  Being part of the English heritage collection it is well maintained, there is a small exhibit  inside the office. If hiking with an amazing view is your hobby? Lake Windermere is a must, combine it with somewhere comfy and relaxing to stay in Ambleside.

Crow How Country Guest House  Ambleside Lake Windermere Our trip included a 2 night stay at Crow How, the location was ideal for us as it was very quiet, scenic and only a 10 minute walk or 3-5 minute car journey to Ambleside town centre.  Everything appeared to be well kept and it was nicely furnished. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and made for a good nights sleep, that combined with the very quiet surroundings.  Breakfast offered a nice variety with cereals, fruit, yogurt, Granola and a number of hot options, we had the full English which was very good.   All the staff were polite, friendly and efficient. There was a communal lounge with nice decor and comfortable furnishings, there are also a number of seating areas / options outside to relax and enjoy the countryside and views.  Our activities included walking up to Stock Ghyll Force.   https://www.visitcumbria.com/amb/stock-ghyll-force/ We started from the Crow How and made our way t...
