STIRLING CASTLE AND THE WILLIAM WALLACE MONUMENT
First stop on our Scottish 4 day Castle Tour (by car)
Stirling Castle seemed familiar to me, mainly, because it reminded me of Edinburgh Castle, a very impressive position perched atop its intrusive crag, well preserved also, we really enjoyed our visit with lots of different areas to see and explore.
The views are stunning and stretch as far as the eye can see in all directions, the location of the castle was no accident.
You can see Bridgehaugh, right next to Stirling Old Bridge which was the site of the battle of Stirling Bridge where in 1297 William Wallace defeated an English army.
With its place in history, we had to visit on our trip.
Whilst in Stirling, we ignorantly stumbled across the William Wallace Monument, due to its unique shape, design and significance we found it to be another highlight of the trip.
It’s a must, it’s quite daunting when you climb to the top and realise how high up you are.
The views are very impressive.
We missed out on visiting the very famous site of the battle of Bannockburn which is where in 1314, Robert the Bruce led the Scottish Army to Victory over King Edward and the English Army.
Its only around a 9 minute drive from Stirling so we really should of allowed ourselves more time.
We did however stay overnight at the Stirling Court Hotel, located a 10 minute drive from the Castle and a 3 minute drive from the Monument.
Nice comfortable furnishings and a nice selection at breakfast.
The price was reasonable, but the hotel was slightly on the larger side due to being on campus, personally I prefer a smaller, personal hotel and in most cases a more traditional feel.
This shouldn’t stop you though as overall a very pleasant stay and a great location for visiting the sites.
