Follow in King Edward I footsteps and visit Caerlaverock Castle the only triangular Castle in Britain
Caerlaverock Castle
Dumfries
Scotland
A 13th century medieval moated Castle, the only triangular Castle in Britain.
With a bloody history and unique design, Caerlaverock makes for a photogenic and interesting visit.
A must see for all castle enthusiasts, very impressive.
We visited Caerlaverock first, on a weekend road trip away visiting Castles, hiking and enjoying the views of Lake Windermere and the lively town of Ambleside (this is covered in my blog Crow How Country Guest House, link below )

Parts of the castle are inaccessible at the moment, due to repair work, but there is still plenty to see and explore.
The grounds are very well kept and the castle itself is is very imposing, just has a draw to it that I can’t explain.
We were given free entry due to being an English Heritage volunteer, for which we are very grateful.
The ruins of the castle are in fact the second castle built within the grounds, the original was a smaller square castle, built around 1220 closer to the harbour at the time, it is located a short walk behind its more famous sibling with only the stone footings and outline remaining.
Facilities on site include, a shop, cafe / tearoom and Museum.
Fun fact
In July of 1300, King Edward I with his 3000 plus army besieged Caerlaverock to stamp out Scottish opposition and take command of the strategic position, however the garrison of just 60 held the castle for 2 days under heavy attack.
